Tucker’s Story: Embracing Rehabilitation for a Happy, Active Life
Tucker is a spirited 2-year-old French Bulldog who came to us on June 14, 2023, seeking help for mobility challenges. After being diagnosed with caudal occipital malformation syndrome (also known as a Chiari-like malformation) and hydrocephaly (a neurological disorder), Tucker’s owner noticed a decline in his coordination and balance. Under the guidance of a veterinary neurologist, he was already receiving medical treatment, including gabapentin, prednisolone, and omeprazole.
Despite these challenges, Tucker’s owner believed in his potential and wanted to improve his gait for a more active lifestyle. On his first visit, Tucker showed signs of leaning and struggled to bear weight on one of his hind legs. He also had difficulty with coordination and maintaining balance when standing still and when walking.
We developed a customized rehabilitation plan that included home exercises, we performed acupuncture, and prescribed herbal therapy. Tucker has thrived through 14 sessions, with the last few focusing on maintenance. He’s now more stable and confident on his four paws, making incredible progress!
Check out our videos to see Tucker’s transformation—from his initial struggles to his newfound stability and confidence! We’re thrilled to support Tucker on his journey, proving that even with a degenerative condition, improvement and a great quality of life are possible.

SEE HOW WE CHANGED THEIR LIFE
In these clips, Tucker is struggling with his balance and coordination due to his condition, moving slowly and showing signs of weakness. You can see him wobbling and occasionally losing his balance, making movement difficult and affecting his quality of life.
Just a few sessions later, Tucker is showing noticeable improvement. He’s moving with more confidence, taking quicker, steadier steps, and appearing much happier overall. His wobbling has reduced significantly, reflecting his increased stability and strength.
Here, our team is teaching Tucker’s owner a set of home exercises. We’re guiding Tucker over cavaletti poles, an activity that enhances coordination, balance, and muscle strength, allowing him to continue progressing outside of clinic visits.
Tucker and his owner show off their progress with the addition of his home exercises! Tucker can now better maintain his balance while standing, and both he and his owner are thrilled with how far he’s come. This video highlights the impact of consistent treatment and dedication.
