Toby's Inspiring Recovery Journey: From Paralysis to Progress
Meet Toby, a resilient 14-year-old dog whose remarkable recovery showcases the power of innovative treatments and dedicated care. Toby first came to us on November 19, 2021, referred by Royal Palm Veterinary Hospital for evaluation and management of suspected intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) and hind end weakness.
Three months prior to his referral, Toby had struggled with mobility issues and was initially treated with carprofen, which provided some relief. However, his condition worsened, leading to complete paralysis. Following a neurologist’s recommendation and starting on Prednisone, Toby began to regain some function. By the time he came to us, he still had weakness in his rear legs and was dragging them, but he could manage urination and defecation on his own.
At our clinic, we introduced Toby to acupuncture therapy. Remarkably, after just one session, Toby showed noticeable improvement. By his third session, he was walking without dragging his legs! Unfortunately, further acupuncture sessions were interrupted due to Toby’s aggressive behavior, likely stemming from pain and fear.
To continue supporting Toby’s recovery, we prescribed a Chinese herbal supplement called Double PII. This supplement made a significant difference, helping Toby thrive for the next two years and beyond. His progress was so impressive that it was a far cry from the initial recommendation of humane euthanasia.
Toby’s story is a testament to the effectiveness of combining traditional and alternative therapies, even in challenging cases. His incredible recovery, which you can view below, highlights the potential for positive outcomes with a tailored, compassionate approach to treatment. If your pet is facing similar struggles, we’re here to offer hope and advanced care.

In these clips, Tucker is struggling with his balance and coordination due to his condition, moving slowly and showing signs of weakness. You can see him wobbling and occasionally losing his balance, making movement difficult and affecting his quality of life.
After just one acupuncture session, Toby’s progress is already evident! He’s now able to maintain a standing position with greater ease and can walk without dragging his rear legs. This marks a key improvement in his journey, showing the benefits of acupuncture in managing IVDD and hind-end weakness.
By this point, Toby has been doing well on Chinese herbal therapy alone for nine months, without further acupuncture to keep our visits Fear Free. He’s maintaining his comfort and mobility, demonstrating how complementary treatments like herbal therapy can support long-term well-being in pets with IVDD.
After an almost 2 year hiatus, Toby returns for a follow-up acupuncture treatment. His owner decided to resume acupuncture now that Toby is more comfortable with the process. Despite being well-managed on herbal therapy, Toby’s continued improvement with both treatments demonstrates the power of combining approaches to maintain his health and mobility.
