CASE MAIZEY

Maizey, a beloved canine companion, came to our integrative medical center on March 6, 2023, for an assessment and conservative management of hind end weakness and back pain. Maizey had a complex medical history, including left-sided osteoarthritis in her elbow, biceps tendinopathy, and bilateral hip degenerative joint disease (DJD). She had also been managing back pain and had a liver shunt and gallstones. Her prior conditions contributed to her mobility challenges, particularly affecting her left front limb and overall activity.

At the time of her first appointment, Maizey’s owner reported a noticeable decrease in her playfulness and activity levels. Once a lively and energetic dog, Maizey had begun exhibiting bunny hopping when attempting to run, with increased panting, especially at night. Her posture had changed, and she seemed to slide with her right back leg when eating. Maizey had previously received a steroid injection to address her left front limb lameness, but it caused a significant spike in liver values, prompting her owner to seek a reevaluation of her treatment plan.

In response to her condition, we adopted a conservative, integrative approach that included photobiomodulation (laser therapy), acupuncture, and herbal therapy over the past 1.5 years. These treatments were particularly beneficial since Maizey’s complex medical history made traditional pain management methods, such as NSAIDs, unsuitable for her. The results have been remarkable. Maizey has regained her zest for life—she is once again running, playing, and enjoying her activities.
